    Description

Abingdon Pottery in Abingdon, Illinois, made numerous art pottery vases, household items, & figurines 1934-50.  Most pieces were available in their catalogs, but a few items were special-ordered, custom-made, &/or considered non-production items.
This Abingdon Indian chief figurine is one of their non-production items made on a limited basis & not widely distributed.  Reference is made to this piece, along with an Indian maiden figurine, as being "not production items" on page 141 of the 1997 reference book "Abingdon Pottery Artware" by Joe Paradis.  This piece is usually found in this glossy white glaze, although I have seen it with gold accents & multi-colored.  This piece has dark blue glaze dots in the center of the eyes.  With production very limited, it is hard to find.  I have never seen one that has the Abingdon mark, but with the open bottom, it would have been difficult to stamp with a factory mark.
The piece is 5 inches tall, 3-1/4 inches wide at his shoulders, & about 2 inches front to back.  The mold is very crisp & the details of the piece really show well.  It does have a factory firing crack about 5/8 inch long on the front of the square base as shown in the last photo.  Otherwise, it is in very good vintage condition, with no chips or crazing, but it
